Description

Botanical Name:  Althaea officinalis

Components:  Native to Europe and parts of the United States, marshmallow is a member of the mallow family and tends to favor a marshy habitat, hence its name. It is a tall herb with lavender flowers and flattened round fruit. The leaves and the roots are the parts most often used medicinally.

Overview:  The phytochemicals in marshmallow root contain antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as compounds that boost the immune system. Large concentrations of mucilage soothe and protect inflamed mucous membranes in the throat, stomach, intestines, and urinary tract, making it a great treatment for coughs, colds, and digestive disturbances. Marshmallow also helps soothe the skin and can be used to treat everything from insect bites to eczema.

Uses:  The dried root may be made into a tea or used as a poultice on inflamed or bruised skin.
