Components: Rooibos tea comes from dried leaves of the Rooibos bush. Red rooibos has an aromatic taste and natural sweetness with hints of honey and vanilla. The leaves are green on the bush, but once harvested turn they red as they are exposed to oxygen. Less oxidized leaves can be sold as green rooibos tea, which has a grassy, mineral flavor.
Overview: Red rooibos tea contains 50% more antioxidants than green tea, making this tea one of the best for soothing inflammation and destroying free radicals that can cause cancer. Rooibos is good for cholesterol, lowers blood pressure and promotes bone health. Its natural sweetness and aspalathin content reduce stress hormones that cause hunger and fat storage, making it a great choice when trying to lose weight. Rooibos extract’s antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties make it good for use on skin to soothe and heal.
Uses: For the perfect cup of red rooibos tea: put 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of tea into a strainer and place in cup; heat fresh filtered water to a boil and pour 8 oz over tea; steep for 5-6 minutes (or longer if desired); remove strainer and tea leaves; enjoy hot or cold!
