Botanical Name: Mentha piperita
Components: Native to Europe, this aromatic flowering perennial is a natural hybrid of spearmint and water mint.
Overview: The main phytochemical in peppermint, menthol, does far more than freshen the breath. It tames muscle spasms in the intestinal tract, relaxes skeletal muscles, improves the flow of bile, aids in breaking up mucus and congestion, and kills certain bacteria and viruses. Menthol may also help dissolve gallstones, eliminating the need for surgery.
Uses: Dried peppermint leaf is most commonly used as a tea.
