Botanical Name:  Trigonella foenum-graecum

Components:  Fenugreek is an annual in the legume family. The seeds form in pods much like those of green beans. They have a pungent aroma similar to curry powder and an astringent, bitter flavor.

Overview:  In ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, these seeds were used to treat everything from bronchial problems to tuberculosis to skin issues. Today, fenugreek is still a bit of a panacea, known to improve problems associated with arthritis, high blood pressure, infections, breast milk deficiency, constipation, and eczema. As a culinary spice, fenugreek is commonly used in Indian cooking.

Uses: The dried seed is used whole or powdered as a culinary spice, encapsulated, or as a tea or tincture – Fenugreek seed is not safe for use during pregnancy.
